Courage (“Yuu”)

The bravery of the yamabusho is something very special: It is a courage born of compassion, and is always carried with dignity and grace. Remember: The peace that is within us also works through us.

It is not important for us always to see the summit of the mountain, just to know that it is there, and to have faith in our ability to climb to it.

Well done Yamabushi Ryu!

As we all know, the last couple of years have seen a lot of changes in the ryu. Thanks to all of you working hard together, they have been strong, positive ones, ones that point the way to a brighter and better future, changes that I know we have all welcomed and embraced.

This is just a short post to say how very much I appreciate absolutely everything you have done, and continue to do, on behalf of our school. especially as I know from first hand experience that it has been a far from easy transition. You had to sort out our insurances, our licences and our certificates, as well as to plan and organise gradings and courses. But, you have all managed to do these things. You have managed to succeed where, in the past, I have witnessed many fail. This is in keeping with the true spirit of the mountain warrior, made famous by their determination in never giving up and always realising the goals they set themselves.

This makes me feel very proud, and I would like to offer you all my heartfelt thanks:

To Gareth Renshi, for keeping dojo shugenja dojo going, even though he has to work all the hours God sends.

To Mark Sensei, for running classes, managing to turn up for training, and countless lifts home on cold evenings

To Dan “the man” Sensei, who not only teaches, but communicates with everyone far better than I ever could (+ lifts)

To Graham Sensei, for stepping up and becoming our grading examinations officer, and hardly missing a class ( “)

To Jacob Renshi, who keeps gojo ikiyoyo going, helps with organising and has represented the IMAS in certain important meetings (plus, again, lifts home!)

To Peter Renshi for always being there, and running a successful dojo for over ten years now.

To David Renshi, for being my long suffering uki for the past decade and more, who’s enthusiasm and laughter (as well as grunts of pain) brighten up every training session

And, of course,  everyone else in the Ryu, instructors and students alike. You are the very life-blood of the school, so thank you for keeping the tradition alive by becoming a part of it.

We have been through a difficult situation during a difficult time, and I know some of the people mentioned above have had to cope with some really serious personal issues along the way. So please don’tever think this has gone un noticed or un appreciated.

Once again, thank you, and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Some yamabushi are Tough Mudders!

Well done to all those yamabushi who recently completed the local Tough Mudder event.. Students and instructors from  local dojo took part in this gruelling ten mile assault course , specially designed by the military to test even the fittest and strongest participants. The yamabushi acquitted themselves with honour, and demonstrated superb teamwork throughout. Congratulations to them all

Eee, By Gum!

A warrior must look within themselves for their motivation. Just because we don’t “Need” to do something doesn’t mean it should not be done. Just because we don’t wan’t to train hard does not mean we should not. This tenacity and determination is what makes us different: We choose to carry on, where others turn back. A true yamabushi understands and accepts that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience. Rather, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.

A warrior must be like a beautiful flower in a field of weeds or a ray of sunlight on a cold winters day. If you dont stand out, then how can you expect others to follow? Lend hope where there is despair, strength where their is weakness and courage where there is fear, Inspire yourself so that you can inspire others.

Visit from Toby Humphry Renshi a great success

Students and instructors from throughout the Greater Manchester area rallied to attend the recent visit from Rev. Toby Humphry Renshi.

Toby was one of the first students and, later, became one of the original instructors at Dojo Shugenja in Atherton, and all were delighted when it was announced that he would be paying them a short visit on Thursday, 8th of August. On that evening, Toby shared the teaching with some of the other local instructors, and a great time was had by all.

After the training, it was off for some curry and beer at a nearby restaurant, which gave everyone the opportunity foe a chat and to catch up with each other on a more informal footing.

This event was enjoyed so much, that we are now exploring the possibility of returning the favour, and visiting Toby in the beautiful and ancient town of Ely sometime in the New Year, so stay tuned for more information soon.

Our heartfelt thanks to Toby for making such an effort, and thanks also to Danny MacKenzie Sensei, who did such a great job at organising things at short notice/
